Ledger treatment

Cash rounding adjustments aren't included in your Net Sales or Sales tax reporting since rounding is not considered a sale. Cash rounding adjustments are recorded as cash over/short, which is considered non-taxable income or an expense.

Tax treatment

Cash rounding is a non-taxable service charge adjustment for cash payments only, applied after taxes and discounts are applied to the check.

Customer disclosure

Guest-facing screens, Toast Mobile and printed receipts display: "If you pay with cash, your total may be rounded per this location's policy." Receipts carry a cash rounding line item.

Audit record

Cash rounding appears as a line item in the Revenue Summary and Sales Summary Report, in the shift review cash and tips reconciliation step, and on the Z-Report.

Ledger treatment

Tax treatment

Square apps will calculate taxes on the original transaction amount before rounding is applied. You are responsible for determining the impact of the cash rounding adjustment to your tax collection, reporting and remittance obligations.

Mixed tender

On split cash and card payments the cash portion is rounded to the nearest $0.05 and the card portion is charged the exact amount. Square documents that the order of payment, cash first or card first, may affect the final amounts, with worked examples.

Customer disclosure

Digital and printed receipts display the original subtotal and tax, the rounding adjustment line item, and the final rounded total.

State restriction

Cash rounding is currently unavailable to sellers with locations in Connecticut in compliance with state law. Sellers with locations in Connecticut don't have access to cash rounding across any Square locations.

Some states may require you to notify your customers that their transaction is being rounded to the nearest 5 cents. Please check the guidelines with your state and local governments.

The rounding adjustment does not alter item prices, taxes, service charges or discounts; it is applied as the final post-tax adjustment.

Refunds

Full refunds honour the original rounding method and direction. Partial refunds are rounded independently, with a worked example of a $4.68 partial refund adjusted by $0.02 to $4.70. A merchant cannot refund more than what was initially collected.

Mixed tender

Clover documents that applicable tender types, cash only versus all tenders, can vary by region and merchant configuration.

Customer disclosure

Custom receipt implementations, both paper and web, must display the round adjustment as a distinct line item just above the final amount collected, and tethered third-party displays must reflect it to the customer during the transaction.

Audit record

Payment, Order and Refund API objects carry the adjustment as a discrete signed field.

Vendor disclaimer

Do not hardcode round logic into your app. The round direction (up, down, nearest), unit (1s, 10s), and applicable tender types (cash only versus all tenders) can vary by region and merchant configuration. Rely strictly on the adjustment values returned by the Clover API.

Rounds cash payments to the nearest $0.05 after tax.

Mixed tender

Applies only to cash payments; card and digital payments are unaffected.

The feature is described as selecting a rounding denomination and rule for a currency and applying it to the cash payment type. Lightspeed's R-Series documentation describes an automatic default for Belgian merchants; we did not locate an equivalent for any United States jurisdiction.

Modelled in the Admin GraphQL API as a CashRoundingAdjustment object, described as the rounding adjustment applied to total payment or refund received for an Order involving cash payments, with a positive or negative value that is zero where there is no rounding or for non-cash payments.

The CashRoundingAdjustment object covers refunds as well as payments, so a refund carries its own rounding adjustment value.

Reading note

Shopify's POS help centre pages on cash rounding are served behind a browser verification challenge, so this record rests on Shopify's developer changelog and Admin API reference. Shopify documents cash rounding on POS as Swedish rounding to the nearest five cent increment, configured per country and applying automatically in countries where the smallest coin is out of circulation, naming Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Shopify's changelog states that the setting becomes enabled by default on a scheduled rollout from July 26, 2026 for merchants who have not set it themselves. Refunds and exchanges are documented as carrying their own rounding adjustment. This is a shipped cash rounding feature that predates the United States transition because it was built for those markets, which is why it is recorded as shipped rather than as a general price rounding setting.

When rounding to the nearest .05, this distinction is not needed since there is no midpoint.

Ledger treatment

A display adjustment option shows the rounding benefit on the on-screen and printed guest check, the variance between the sales total and the payments total, and on back of house reports. A print rounded indicator option prints Round after the change due line.

Customer disclosure

The guide advises that the merchant must have signage visible to the consumer for the rounding on cash payments, and that the consumer must have the option to decline the rounding and still receive exact change. These are stated as merchant guidance rather than documented software controls.

The restaurant can choose to round up which benefits the restaurant, round down which benefits the consumer, or round logically up or down to whichever is closest; however, we recommend that you consult with your legal representative on the guidelines within your jurisdiction.

Rounding configuration is documented for Aloha POS through Aloha Configuration Center. We did not locate an Aloha Cloud specific rounding document, so whether the Aloha Cloud back office exposes the same rounding tab is not established here.

Cash rounding occurs only for cash transactions and applies after taxes, fees, and discounts have been calculated.

Refunds

Round down benefits the customer and a refund of a round down transaction also benefits the customer. Round up benefits the site and a refund of a round up transaction also benefits the site. Round nearest tends to even out transactions. Sample sale and refund receipts are documented for both strategies.

Mixed tender

A split tender transaction with a rounding adjustment is documented as a receipt example. The computation rule for split tender is not set out in prose.

Customer disclosure

The PIN pad shows a rounded cash due line, the POS shows the rounded cash due before tender and a rounding adjustment line after tender, and self checkout shows the rounded cash due line. Only rounded amounts may be tendered in cash; a non-rounded entry returns an invalid amount error.

Ledger treatment

Commander receipts will continue to show exact totals. Merchants using rounding should track policies for reconciliation and accounting purposes. Commander reports using the manual solution discussed below will show specific department totals for round up/down tracking.

Tax treatment

The bulletin instructs operators not to apply any taxes, fees, ID checks or blue laws to the rounding department, and not to allow food stamps unless SNAP customers are required to round.

Mixed tender

Split Tender transactions need to be handled separately since you can not add another line item to a partially paid transaction. A separate transaction may be created to account for the additional cents you rounded up or down.

Customer disclosure

Create a written store policy and train cashiers for consistent application. Post clear signage at the register for customers.

Vendor disclaimer

No federally mandated rounding policy exists as of March 2026. Verifone is adding automated rounding support to Commander software, starting with maintenance releases in 55.02, 56.03, and major release 57.xx. POS transactions will continue to calculate and display exact totals. Some limited manual solutions exist.

Reading note

The documentation we located describes a Round Up Cash action that assumes the next whole dollar has been tendered, and an Auto Cash default that settles an order for the exact balance due. Both articles predate the penny transition and neither describes rounding to a five cent increment.
